Choosing Exterior Paint Colours for a Brisbane Queenslander
Heritage schemes, modern monochromes and the practical factors — sun, roof colour and neighbours — that should shape your choice.

Queenslanders are generous canvases: weatherboards, battens, window hoods, fretwork, balustrades and stumps all take colour. That is both the opportunity and the challenge. Here is how we help owners in Paddington, New Farm, Ascot and across Brisbane settle on a scheme.
Start with what you cannot change
Roof colour, brick or stone bases, window glass tint and the colours of neighbouring homes all constrain your palette. A terracotta roof and a cool grey body rarely sit well together; a Colorbond "Monument" roof pairs easily with whites, greys and deep greens.
Three common directions
Heritage
Cream or stone body, deep red, green or brown trims, and lighter detail on fretwork. Suits well-preserved homes and heritage-overlay areas. Brisbane City Council publishes guidance on traditional colours for character homes.
Contemporary white
A warm white body with white or charcoal trims and a dark roof. Crisp, popular and easy to style, but shows dirt and mould on shaded sides — choose a mould-resistant exterior acrylic.
Moody and dark
Charcoal, deep navy or green body with white trims. Dramatic and currently popular, but darker colours absorb more heat and can fade faster in full sun; use premium UV-stable products and expect to refresh sun-facing walls sooner.
Test in place
Paint A3-sized samples on the north and south sides of the house and look at them morning and afternoon. Brisbane's light is strong; colours read noticeably lighter and warmer outdoors than on a chip.
Count the surfaces
A scheme with three or four colours costs more in labour than two, because every colour change means cutting in by brush. Decide where detail colour genuinely adds value — usually fretwork, window hoods and the front door.
